Injured...a set back with exercise

Ouch!
I'm reaching out to all of you for a bit of input.  I've somehow hurt my knee (again).  I don't think this is running related since it started hurting during my time off from running.  However, it hurts.  It really hurts.  Especially when I run, walk, sit, stand, move in my sleep, breathe, blink, cook, do laundry, vacuum the carpets, scrub toilets, etc.  This injury is gonna get me out of a TON of housework, friends!  That might be the only good thing about it, though.  lol

I'm making an appointment to go see what could be wrong.  I feel as though that's kind of a theme in my life.  I go see the sports med doc every 6 months or so with a new injury.  Gotta keep those insurance companies in business, right?

Anyway, what time of DVD workouts are you guys liking these days.  I'm thinking a lot of my gym routine will be put on hold until this stops hurting.  Maybe home workouts are in order for now.  Something that doesn't require running or jumping.....or lots of knee bending.  Does such a DVD exist?  I think I own all of the WATP (walk away the pounds) DVDs.  I'm really not wanting to buy  more at this time.  Plus, the walking/running movement hurts at this point in time.

With allll that being said, I'm headed to the gym tonight to sit and pout as my favorite class gets their groove on find a machine that doesn't hurt me.  I know the pool would be a great option considering the knee pain, but the rules at my gym are super strict.  The class times are crazy, and one of the local colleges hogs up a good portion of the non class times.  Plus, I'm feeling a tad lazy, and don't want to partake in any strategic shaving of the bikini line just for an aquatics class.  :)

Heather!!!!! Okay. Got that out of the way. Hope you feel better way soon! In the meantime, it's hard to do anything without involving the knee, unless you just take the time to focus on upper body. I would just do that. And I know at the Y, they have this cool machine I've had my eye on that is like doing chin ups, only you're kneeling on this bench this goes up and down. I guess it's a way of easing you into doing chin ups with full body weight? Don't know.

I have my orientation tomorrow morning for the weight circuit machines (whatever they're called) as part of my strength training. I've also been back at it with the cardio, elliptical, stationary bike, skating, even got the hula hoop back out tonight, and a few runs snuck in during the week.

Take care of that knee, and yes, yes, no housework allowed! And family, please help mama/wife out as much as possible so she can get better really quick!

((((Heather)))) I agree with Reen to work on upper body. Find a decent trainer at your gym to get some ideas of what to do. My daughter, also a runner, has had a lot of hip problems and I referred her to my trainer, who has helped her a lot. If it continues to hurt, make sure you get an x ray to see what is causing the pain.

I broke my foot last year and when I found I'd be off of it for four months I flipped out.
But I found a TON of "Chair Aerobics" and yoga, boxing, and tai-chi, and Wheelchair exercise videos that just worked wonders. Especially chair aerobics and yoga, I wound up focusing on those two, and the aerobics has a standing section so if you can put weight on your feet but need a chair for support you can get a bit more done.
Just hit amazon or google for "chair aerobics" and for $7 to $15 you'll be in business!

Do you think it could be IT band syndrome? If so, you should be able to find some good stretches online that you could do.

Heather said...

Nope. Not ITBS. I had a round with that when I very first started running a few years ago. That's the side of the knee that hurts with IT band issues (which I still battle to this day). This is directly behind the knee cap. Sigh....

Sorry to hear about your knee. Like you say I think swimming would help a lot, but it's whether you can fit it in to your scheduele. I once felt uncomfortableness in my knees and I find whenever I lose weight they get much better as there's less weight placed upon them :)

Hi Heather! I love your blog!! I've been doing WW along with supplementing with vitamins and minerals from Youngevity. I find your blog so inspirational!! However, in my quest to get healthy and exercise more frequently I've found that I need to keep my supplements up and take gluco-gel (this has been helping tremendously with the soreness of joint pain!!). Let me know if you'd like to try it!!
