Going gluten free for health reasons has been totally exhausting. Ironic considering I have more energy now that gluten isn't sucking the life out of me!
I've found myself not really caring about the past 10+ years of weight watchin'. [GASP] I know, right? What the hell is the matter with me? I'm having to be focused, focused, focused on gluten, gluten, gluten. Finding the balance between point A and point B (Points pun intended) has been the three T's: tricky, tiring, and turbulent. Can I share a dirty little secret with you? This is the way I felt when I very first started Weight Watchers! I never thought I'd ever have to feel that way again. I made a vow to never ever have to lose weight again. I hated the way being in that unhealthy place in life made me feel. It was so difficult relearning everything I had ever known. So I'm glad I stuck to my vow, found balance with food, and managed to keep the weight off all this time. Little did I know other boulders would be thrown in my path to create different kinds of obstacles. I guess the Universe showed me, eh? Everything is so different for me now. Gluten hides in food items you would never ever in a million years think it should or would be (like my favorite spicy mustard, for instance). All of my go-to snacks and foods have been snatched away from me. Not that I sat around eating junky stuff by any means. I'm talking normal, everyday, whole grain foods. Gone from my diet forever. Except for fruits and veggies! Those are still the same, and I still eat an ass ton of them each day! :-)
I'm still holding my own. Still fitting in my pants. Still going through all the motions of living a healthy lifestyle, even though my focus has had to shift a bit. I suppose that's the beauty of the whole "healthy lifestyle journey". I certainly created healthy habits for myself over the years. Somewhere along the way...those habits decided to stick to me like glue. They are the only thing saving my tushy from growing right now. Well, that and training for another half marathon! lol (I've officially signed up to run 3 this year, and an seriously contemplating tossing a 4th into the mix. You can read about my pathetic running/coffee obsession at www.WillRunForCoffee.com.)
I guess the point I'm trying to make is...stick to the healthy routine as much as possible. It does help. Even when you feel as though it's not making a lick of difference, it is. Even when you feel every ounce of motivation & stamina has been sucked from your soul. Somewhere down the road of this journey, whether it's 10 minutes, days, months or years from now, you will appreciate all the effort.
Keep keepin' on!

I completely understand where you are coming from. I went GF recently to see if it would help with my health problems. (i've been waiting 3 months to see a new GI specialist).
I think it's helped some. But I'm finding it easier to skip gluten substitutes because they are so pointy!
Ive gone gluten free for my thyroid health, it has only been a couple of months and I am getting so much shit for it. I found this article

And it was a big eye opener. I posted it to my facebook and still everyone beat me down about my decision. I swear if I had said I am going vegan I would have gotten high fives! Ridiculous, so much mis-information out there.
Wow this really looks like a spammers messages! LMAO, it's not I promise. Just a regular mom of 4 on Weight watchers trying gluten free as well
I think it boils down to sticking with a good healthy balance of foods just as I did before going GF. I didn't eat that much bread then. I certainly shouldn't be now. I'm falling into the trap of wanting to try EVERYthing on the market that's GF. I need to do it with moderation. Moderation, moderation, moderation.
We need to do a virtual high 5 for sticking up for ourselves & taking control of our health!!!! :)
Heather, my Mom has been changing her diet in the past year and is also avoiding gluten and sugar. She's doing GREAT and has so much more energy.
I've was diagnosed with Celiac 3 years ago and going gluten free has been such a change. I lost 40lbs on the old WW plan so it did take some getting used to! However, you become such a healthier eater when you are forced to make non-gluten choices. Good luck!!
I was diagnosed with Celiac 3 years ago. When I first went gluten free I went crazy with all the GF packaged foods. I didn't eat that stuff before going GF, so I have no idea why I was eating it now!? Protein, fruit, veggies, dairy, and GF grains. Then add the other stuff for treats! Good luck!
Thank you Heather for posting such an inspirational post. You will not know how helpful this has been to me.
Wow. Just came across your blog and I am IN LOVE! I am now going to troll through all of your posts :)
I've seen some gluten-free recipes in some cookbooks here. I'd have to check that out again. Thanks for the post.
You have an award on my blog!

I would love to see your list. So far I am still losing weight, I am still following Weight Watchers just doing it gluten free. I to am wanting to try all of the gluten free products, but you are right we have to do it in moderation!
Thanks for the GF post! I just found your blog. I have been weight watching since Jan11 and gluten free since Nov10. It is challenging but now that I am GF, I have more energy and I am not sick all the time so I can focus on other heLth issues like weight!
My go to lunch has been. WW recipe for chic pea brown rice veggie burgers that I make GF and eat with some salsa. They freeze well and are easy to grab for lunch since I can't eat at the cafe at work.... Still recovering from bread crumbs in a 'vegetable soup'
