My Favorite Things: the ear gear edition

Ooooo....I so love talking about my favorite things.  So when a question rolled in via my blog comments, I just had to jump on it & whip up a quick post about it.  Caseykfromsantafe asked:
"I have got a question that I am hoping you can answer...looking for some headphones that don't fall out when I run. Any suggestions?!"
Casey, I love the Sennheiser PMX80 Sport Series II Behind the Head Ear Phones For Sports, and bought them on Amazon.com as I do most things.  After personally buying & trying at least 8 other brands / styles, I found these and have never looked back!

  • they don't hurt my ears like the ipod "ear buds" did (ouch!)
  • I actually don't feel them on my head or in my ears at all
  • fabulous sound!
  • no matter what I do or how I move my body, the Sennheisers stay put!
  • I can run for miles and miles, dripping with sweat....and they keep working
  • they do not bounce around when I run (bouncing becomes annoying after a while)
  • if my arm gets caught in the cord, the phones still stay put
  • I'm not constantly putting them back in my ears like I did the "ear wrap" or the "bud" style phones
  • if you need to remove them in order to listen to someone you're with...just pop one side out & up...it will stay put until you're ready to tune back in to your music
Kent and I have learned the hard way....you get what you pay for.  Unfortunately, we have dumped well over $200 into finding "the perfect set of headphones".  That includes the two pair of Sennheisers we have now. $10 here.....$25 there.  I dropped them on the ground and they won't work here....my sweat shorted this pair out there.  It adds up.  FAST.  I think these cost us around $40 or $45 per pair, and that included shipping costs.  They're worth every penny.  I've had other wrap style headphones in the past that I just honestly hated so I was hesitant to try them again.  My husband talked me into boring his Sennheisers one day (he bought a pair long before I did).  I wore them for one short, 3 mile run.  Came home.  Placed my order for a pair of my own before I so much as showered.  Kent bought his.....I don't know...maybe a year ago.  So they've lasted a good while compared to how often we were replacing others for him.  I've lost track of how many others he burned through before these.  He tends to "short them out" with sweat.  Knock on wood, we've not had a single problem with the Sennheisers!

I can already hear some of you poo-pooing spending any amount of money on decent gear.  When you're passionate about exercise, staying on track, & keeping the weight off, you need and DESERVE top of the line gear.  The more you skimp on the cost of things you honestly need & use on a regular basis, the more uncomfortable you'll be while doing the activity.  I've learned this the hard way with running shoes, running socks, MP3 players, headphones, and sports bras. We'll save the sports bra story for another day.  :)

Great review! Thanks!

When you run, how do you keep track of or count your mileage? I prefer to just run where the spirit leads but then I have a heck of a time tracking distance. Any suggestions?

Jo, I have a Garmin Forerunner....LOVE IT! It motivates me like nothing else, pluse clocks my miles. I can set it to do all kinds of cool things...like interval workouts. Plus so so so much more. Here's a link:

I used MapMyRun.com for over a year, and MAN is the Garmin so much better. However, MapMyRun.com is free compared to a wrist watch size GPS device. lol

Question about the headphones (somewhat embarrassing): are they adjustable? I have a LARGE head and am afraid they would hurt me, but I spent my entire run this morning shoving my earphones back in my ear -- annoying! Love all of your tips!

They are not adjustable, but there's plenty of room to fit different shaped heads.
