The inaugural Portland Half Marathon 10-10-2010....running for a cause

OK.  I did it.  I took another giant step for "Heatherkind".  A step that will help out during this crazy journey of becoming a healthier Heather.  I signed up to run another half marathon!  [This is the part where you start clapping and cheering for me.  A few tears of joy rolling down your face would be a nice touch.]

I was elated to hear the Portland Marathon is hosting their inaugural half marathon this year.  I almost cried when I went to register, and in big, red letters I read, "The event is SOLD OUT! Registration is now closed for the Half.".  Sigh.  Good thing I'm determined & somewhat observant.  I noticed the blurb also went on to say they still have charity runner spots open.  I took a look at the list of charities to support, and it took me no time at all to make up my mind.  Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be running as a Susan G. Komen Marathon For The Cure "Team Portland 2010" registrant, and could not be more excited to run for such an excellent cause!  I think registration being closed was a blessing in disguise.

Why is this particular charity the one I've chosen to support?  #1. I have boobs.  #2. Two of my aunts had breast cancer.  One is a 20+ year survivor.  One passed away several years ago of colon cancer.  #3. My grandmother passed away shortly after having a mastectomy.  #4.  I have a daughter, a sister, a mother, friends, enemies, neighbors, and coworkers who all deserve to see a cure come about in their lifetime.  #5.  Just because.

So for myself & all of the reasons I listed above, I'll run 13.1 miles on 10-10-10 in Portland, Oregon.  The only goal I have is for my knee to not kill me the entire way through like it did during my first half marathon.  (Physical therapy has done wonders for me, but I have a loooong way to go before my knee is ready to run 13 miles again.)  Oh, and I could also skip the diarrhea part as well.  That was more than unpleasant. I really do not wish to relive it ever again.  EVER.  N-e-v-e-r. Gross.

{my official entry form}

Because I'm running as a charity registrant, I'll be raising funds.  I'll be talking about it A LOT.  Mainly because if I don't raise the funds....my credit card will be charged $500.00.  [gulp]  That was not an easy thing to explain to my husband.  So I have to raise $500.00, and that's a lot to raise, in my opinion.  I've got several ideas on how I can earn the cash (other than just asking for donations).  Of course, some sewing will be involved.  I'm envisioning lots of pink fabric in my near future. lol  Anything I make & sell from here on out will be 100% donation worthy.  I also have a few other ideas in my back pocket.  Mowing lawns.  Scrubbing toilets.  Teaching couponing & healthier cooking classes to my friends who have begged me repeatedly to do so.  I'll do whatever it takes!  I'll tell you more about it once I find out more.  Until then, wish me (and my bum knee) luck!

Congrats for signing up for the Portland Half! I'm also signed up for this race, so maybe I'll see you there! :)

So proud to know you, Heather! You've got HEART! Good for you!

Although I originally said half marathan, na, not for me, no desire to do it, I think I'm starting to change my mind. We'll see. Haven't seen anything that sparks my interest around here yet.

The Broad Street Run in Philly was this past weekend, 10 miles, and I had thought about that. Thank goodness I didn't, because it was horribly hot and humid for this time of year. But I'm sure I'll find something. Since I did the 5K last year, I do want to go further.

I'll stay tuned to see what you're up to with the donations. You're so talented with that sewing machine. I'm sure you'll be whipping up some great creations and making money before you know it. P.S. Pink is my favorite color (hint, hint). So I'll be watching. :)

Congratulations on all of your running endeavors! I am sort of still a walker/jogger/stumbler/panting for breath person but I am trying! You're a great example to me in your weight loss and maintenance and also in your fitness goals.
I made your mini pizzas a few times but got tired of pressing out all of those blasted biscuits. We have 7 children and can you imagine how long that takes? So I had this great idea to use a tortilla press to press out the biscuits. It works great! I blogged it today. Have a wonderful day.

Susan....you are a GENIUS!!!!!!! I'm going to be sure to make note of that tip for everyone to see. I need to figure out the best way to d it. Hmmmm.....thinking. I need coffee to think this much. lol

My life was forever changed after reading it's easier to cut kiddie food with a pizza cutter vs a knife. Sandwiches, pancakes, waffles, toast, soft veggies, etc. It just goes so much faster. I love any kind of tip like the one you shared. Thanks again!

Slowly, I would love to see you there! My mother and father in law live in Salem, and my sister in law lives in Milwaukie. So I'll have a place to stay AND cheerleaders! lol Hope to see you there. :)

Thanks, Reen!!!! I have no desire to do a lot of things. So I know exactly what you mean. I watch people doing certain things, and sit there thinking...."why?". lol The 5k that was here in Lebanon last August was miserable thanks to the humidity. It gets so stinkin' humid here. It's worse here than Dallas ever was (grew up there). So I don't blame you for not wanting to deal with it this time around. I dealt with the snow and ice all winter training for the first half marathon. Now it looks like I'll be running long runs in the humidity. Blech.

So what's your next move? You always have great plans with activity!

Hey, heather. Still thinking on my next move, maybe a 10k or 10 mile race. I don't know if you read my earlier post but I bought a hula hoop and really having fun with it. Would be great if I found a hooping class in the area, or maybe zumba class. I also have a goal to get back on skis next winner. It's been over 20 years since I skiied but used to love it even though I was heavy!

Reen, you might fly off the mountain now that you're tiny! Stay away from ski hills, lady. Do they offer hooping classes? That would be a blast. I am the hula hoop queen on the wii! I can't do it in real life to save my life. What's up with that?

Wish I lived closer to run a 10k with ya!!!!

Reen said...

I haven't found any hooping classes yet, but haven't had much time yet to look.

I wish we lived closer too. But who knows, maybe some day we'll run an event together somewhere. :)

Good for you! Tall Mom is doing Virtual Races to raise money for Marathon for the Cure.

Oh my gosh! I'm signed up for the same race and I'm also signed up with Susan G. Koman Marathon for the Cure team! Congrats on signing up for another half marathon, that is so exciting. Are you moving to the northwest? If so, welcome to Portland! Hopefully I'll see you at the race!

Nurse Kat, you catch on quickly. I wondered if anyone would pick up on an Ohio dwelling gal running a Portland, Oregon race. Nothing is set in stone, but we'll find out for sure in about a week. We've been looking at houses in Vancouver, WA hot & heavy. :)

Either way, I'll see you in Portland 10-10-10! Will you be attending the pre-race dinner?
