FYI: my husband got a job & we're moving to Washington!

We're moving to Vancouver, Washington.  It's official.  My husband found a job, and we couldn't be happier.  We celebrated last night.  Cake was involved.  It was the BEST slice of cake I've had in a while.  Come to think of it, that was the only slice of cake I've had in a while.  I need more cake in my life.

After the cake eating was over, the dread of yet another cross country move set in.  What if this house doesn't sell?  How will we afford two mortgages?  Should we just rent a house while we learn about the area and find something new?  Would it be nicer and easier to just build a new house?  The west coast is notoriously high in housing costs...will we end up living in a tiny little shack of a house?  Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep last night due to all of the wild thoughts floating through my head.  Even though we knew this day was coming at us in warp speed.  Even though ______.  Even though ______.  You can fill in the blanks a million different ways.  Once everything is set into motion, the stress level goes up 10,000%.

Now is the time for me to not let stress get the best of me (or my weight management journey).  I'm looking all of you square in the eye & saying, "GAME ON!".  I've done it before (the cross country move thing). I'll do it again (obviously). I will live through this without gaining back the 80 pounds I worked so hard to lose. No move or life change is worth going back to that unhealthy sloppy mess of a life I had before losing the weight.  I can do this.  My plan is rather basic:

#1.  Be Accountable: I will be more attentive than ever with journaling.  Even when we're stuck living in a hotel.  Even while we travel to our new destination.  Even while I have no measuring cups to rely on.  On some level, I will need to rely on #2, 3 & 4 in order for this to work as planned.

#2.  Manage My Habits & Emotions: I will be fully aware of my emotional status.  I know emotional eating will be involved.  That's why #1 (see above) will be so important.

#3.  Stay Active: I will rely on running to provide me the emotional release I need.

#4. Eat Wisely:  There are healthy choices to be made at pretty much every restaurant.  Until we are settled in, I will make sure to follow the Good Health Guidelines (by Weight Watchers) to the best of my ability.  Because when you follow those, it's a tad more difficult to get carried away with the whole crappy eating that landed me in Weight Watchers all those years ago.

{Side Note: Funny thing happened.  When we got the "official call" with the offer last night, I wanted to go for a run.  As I sit here spilling my guts, I feel the need to run.  Not in a "I wanna run away from my life" kind of way.  To be honest, there are lots of times I would like to run away.  Moving doesn't push me any closer to the edge of that cliff than any of my day to day stressors. lol  This is more of a "I have all of this nervous, emotional energy that I have no clue what to do with" kind of thing. I used to sit in my car and eat burgers and fries all alone when faced with this kind of stuff.  Strange things are afoot.  You might want to look out of a window to see if pigs are flying.}

Vancouver is cheap by west coast standards AND we have no income tax in Washington!!! I would rent and get to know the area
Congrats on the job and the move

We're leaning toward doing exactly what you said, Alison. We'll make a trip there soon to check out the area and look at potential rentals. As long as we rent in the same area the kids will attend school, I'm OK with this plan. I would hate to change schools on them again. This move is going to be hard on both of them. They've both been in tears since we told them last night. :(

Moving is so hard on kids, will you be moving after the school year? Oh and don't forget to do your shopping in Portland, no sales tax, Vancouver gets the best of both!

Heather said...

I'll stay here with the kids until the end of the year, but Kent might have to go there without us. Once the school year is over, we don't know what will happen. If this house doesn't sell by the start of next school year, we'll just head on to Washington and leave this one empty. I hate to do that because I know a furnished home shows better than an empty one. We could stage it I suppose. All I really know is that I want the kids to start the year in Washington...and not have to make another move as far as schools go.

I remember the no sales tax in Oregon! I miss that. It took me a good 6 months to get used to paying sales tax here in Ohio after we moved from Oregon. I'm going to buy gas in Oregon as much as possible so that I won't have to pump it myself. lmao

Congrats on the job!! Best wishes to you and your family with the move. I hope you'll like Washington! It's a great place to raise a family and there's lots of frugal bloggers out here to help with saving money on all kinds of stuff!

Yay! The northwest is where we want to be, we live in iowa and plan on moving there in the next year or so. We have all our family in Washougal and Camas, WA which are little suburbs I guess you would say of Vancouver! I love your blog by the way. I've been following you for a while. I've been on ww for 6 months and I've lost 52pound. About halfway to my goal now. You have really inspired me a lot! I'm running my first 5k in June because of your blog!

Heather said...

Camas and Washougal are both places we'll be looking at homes. Found a few already online in both towns. WAY TO GO on the weight loss AND the 5k!!!!

KB, I'm hoping to find some good blogs for matchups in that area. My grocerygame account isn't showinng Fred Meyer as an option. Grrrrrr! That sucks because it's owned by Kroger. I totally rely on my Kroger bargains each week. I use that credit card to buy *everything* & then pay it off at the end of the month. I like to earn all of the bonus points for gas & special coupons. Sigh.

That's so cool! My mother in law lives in washougal and is in a ww meeting there. She became a lifetime member in February. What an incredibly small world!

Vancouver is really nice, my parents lived there for 8 years. In terms of schools, some of the schools offer some neat programs. For example, my little sister went to community college full time her last two years of high school for both HS and college credit, and graduated with her Associates Degree a week after graduating from HS. Also, Between Portland and Vancouver, you get AMAZING farmer's markets. And there is a Fred Meyer. And a WinCo. Talk about frugal groceries!

Heather said...

Becca, I can't wait to get back to the PNW! The farmers markets ARE amazing! I've already been stalking the safeway ads, and found lots of things I could have gotten free with my coupons. It was like a sigh of relief. lol

Thanks, Frances! Ohio is hot. And H-U-M-I-D. I will not miss the humidity. lol

I love that area! I have friends who used to live in Vancouver (they're in Spokane now), and I used to love going up to visit them. They rented a really nice reasonably priced 3-bedroom house while they were there in a subdivision of rental homes. I can get more information from her about them if you like. Just let me know. :)

Congratulations, Heather! So exciting. I wish I could move, but for me, I'd be staying local. Unfortunately, all of my immediately family and my husband's family is here in Jersey area and I've been a Jersey girl all my life.

I would like to move to a different town though, a new house. That sounds exciting to me, but also exhausting. I have been thinking of it and worrying about the same thing, what if the house doesn't sell; how do you start looking for a new house when you don't know if yours will sell.....

You are an amazing woman and so dedicated to your new life and new body since dropping the weight. I know that you will have no problems making it all work.

Run, run, run. I run when I'm mad. I run when I'm sad. I run when I'm stressed. I run when I'm happy. I AM A RUNNER! (That's what I keep telling myself anyway)

I am so happy for you and your family! You will be in my prayers as you go through this process. I gained 125 lbs building this house. I'm here for you! You have my email address. Don't you eat! Email me and I'll make sure you don't! You are such a strong person I doubt if you need my help but I'm here if you do! Here is a tip. I have a little cooler bag that I keep a collaspable silicone measuring cup and a teaspoon and a tablespoon. I also found a pocket scale that weighs up to 25 oz. on Amazon. I carry all of this when we go out to eat. My little cooler bag looks like a purse with a pocket on the outside to hold the scale. Put one of those together to keep with you while you travel and stay in the hotels. You'll have what you need with you!

Congrats! I'm so happy for you!

Great news! Welcome (back).

I've been watching house prices in the Portland area (casually looking online) for the past two years, and the prices have started to really come down just this past month or so. This is a great time to house hunt :)

Congrats on your husband getting a job! I am originally from Seattle, Washington and moved last year to Boston, MA! So I know what your going through! I agree with the others about renting...now that we have been here a year we have checked out the area and other towns and we may buy a house next year...

I am excited for you guys and all the possibilities!!! (And especially if we can see each other soon.)

Hey Heather...I just came across a post on a money-saving blog that you might be interested in. It's got stuff for the Vancouver area. I'm in Redmond (just east of Seattle) so it's not applicable to me, hence I didn't read the whole thing, but wanted to pass it along to you. http://preview.tinyurl.com/285uymx
