My pizza night vow

{part of last week's disaster}
Do you ever have to make deals with yourself just to get through the day?  This is one of those days!  Who am I kidding?  It has been one of those weeks.  Tonight is pizza night for us like every other Friday night for the past 16 years.  I feel the need to make a pinky promise to myself.  Unlike last week's adventure with pizza (and calories), tonight....
  1. I will eat only 2 slices since that's all I have room for calorically speaking.
  2. I will not sneak back into the kitchen when nobody is looking to secretly eat another slice.
  3. and I will certainly not sneak back again for a fourth slice!
  4. I will drink plenty of water to wash the pizza down (instead of Coke).
  5. I will measure my salad dressing.
  6. I will eat every bite of salad.
  7. I will make extra salad & sliced raw veggies just in case I'm still a bit munchy.
  8. I will make a fruit & yogurt parfait or a latte for dessert if I'm wanting to snack later in the evening.
  9. I will wait 20 minutes after eating before deciding if I'm hungry or satisfied.
  10. I will be accountable for my actions.
Now would be a good time to pull out some homemade garden veggie soup out of the freezer, but I ate it all & neglected to make more. lol  Oh well.  Remember that recipe from your week 1 Weight Watchers booklet?  It's a keeper, and you can add as many herbs as you like to spruce up the flavor without adding many calories.  Freezing the soup in 1 or 2 cup portions is perfect for a quick addition to meals.  It makes a great appetizer on pizza night.  Making a big pot will be one of the chores for this weekends to do list.

***UPDATE: Mission accomplished.  I ordered my typical thin crust, but instead of veggies toppings or plain cheese, I added hamburger & bacon (yummmmm!).  I know!  ME.  The veggie lovin' queen.  It was SUCH an awesome change.  The only veggie on that dang pizza was the sauce.  I honestly feel it was WAY more satisfying than the same old, same old I always order for myself.  Had my two big slices of delish take out pizza with a big salad, and washed it all down with homemade ice water with a few berries tossed in for flavor.  :)

Once again, I got a few interesting comments that I chose to delete.  Here's the deal, folks.  Learn to live in the REAL world with REAL food.  As someone who managed to lose 80 pounds & then kept it off for 8 years, that's the best advice I can give you.  I've watched a lot of people do a LOT of strange things with food in order to lose weight.  I never watched any of them keep the weight off going to such extremes.  For me, real food means ordering take out most Friday evenings, going to lunch with my friends now & then, dinner dates, boxed mac & cheese from time to time, adding veggies to recipes that should not contain veggies, full fat salad dressings, salads every day, a beer one a month or so, loads of fresh veggies, equal amounts of frozen veggies, bakery made whole grain bread, skinny vanilla lattes 4+ times a week, having a high calorie days because they keep me tickin' along, etc.  Everyone has their own way.  I get that.  However, if anyone tells me they never ever ever go over portions, calories, Points, etc...I know they're a big, fat liar (or only on day 2 of their journey).  Nobody is perfect.  Perfection is not what this journey is about.

I'm not stating this for the few people who felt the need to leave me nasty messages regarding my choices last week.  (Those people are dead to me now.  "No soup for you!")  I'm writing this to everyone else.  Those of us who sometimes feel less than simply because of a single choice we made.  Have a plan in your back pocket, and make damn sure you follow through with it so the behavior does not continue like a tape recorded loop suspended in time.  You can change what's going on, but you have to be willing to make the change happen.  Even after 8 years of being at your goal weight.  Moving on.***

Oh man...I took a slice in the bathroom once to stuff it in my mouth without anyone seeing me. :( I make pizza at home now.... portion control helps me.

Heather, can I just say that I love how honest you are! We've all done it, we all do it, we all have those same issues and yet sometimes it's so hard to just come out and say it. So, thanks for keeping it real. =) And good luck with your goals!

I found a dressing that has 0 points! It too me a while to get used to the very subtle taste (as in, it doesn't taste like much), but now I'm glad I don't have to measure that dressing.

For the pizza, I ate 3 slices once and believe me, it's hard to go back to 2 after!

Great check list. I would add two items.
11) I will only order thin crust pizza.
12) The topics must all be veggie. On a really tough week (or day) OK to splurge with Canadian Bacon and Pineapple. Absolutely not giving in to pepperoni.

OMG that list sounds like it was created for me. I thought I was the only one that snuck back in for more. How pathetic. 29 and sneaking back in the kitchen I own to sneak another slice of pizza. So embarrassing.....

Thanks for the mirror... wow I don't feel so alone. I hate my wishy-washy willpower - sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not!

Great post!!

I'm a girl who weighed 174 on her wedding day 10 years ago and now weighs 149. I've taken the weight off and kept it off for 9 years through eating right and exercising.

I vacillate between 142-150 and a size 8-10. (I've had 2 kids in the process). I'm at a place where I'd like to lose about 6-7 lbs. But I REFUSE to take any drastic actions to make it happen. I will NOT cut out carbs, cut out sugar, stop eating "real world" foods, stop going out, give up my wine, etc.

If it's not a change I can make for the rest of my life, I don't make it.

I run 10-15 miles per week, I try to stay between 1400-1800 calories a day. I don't eat sugar free, fat free, or many processed foods. I try to eat REAL food. I eat butter, in small amounts. I add 1/2 tsp sugar to my morning oatmeal and raspberries.

What I need to do is watch portions and exercise. That's my solution.

How can anyone give up going out to eat, or having dessert once in awhile, or a beer?

Moderation people!

Kudos to you Heather, you've taken off the weight YOUR way and it's worked for you. Don't let detractors tell you what you can and can't do. We all have to find a balance between living our lives to lose weight and just LIVING OUR LIVES.

You know, recently it FINALLY dawned on me that even if I don't track it -- even if my WW leader doesn't know about it -- even if NOBODY ELSE knows I ate it -- MY BODY KNOWS!! Who did I think I was hiding from -- out there in the kitchen, cleaning the dishes! No, cleaning the dishes does not mean eating all the leftovers! Really, it doesn't!!
My Sweetie and I are making this a life-style change, not a temporary diet! I'm at -29.6 and still losing (I hope, I hope) and I haven't let myself have pizza yet. I do, however, eat Mexican food every 7 - 10 days. That keeps us going -- that is "Real World" for us!
Loved your blog.

I am addicted to pita pizzas. Whenever I get a craving for pizza, which is quite often, I make one. It is simple...one Kronos Pita, top with Don Pepino pizza sauce, low fat mozzarella, little dash of parmesan, pepper and oregano. Put in oven at 375 for 20 minutes. Delicious!

amen! well said Heather! I completely agree you have to be realistic, and the only way to stay sane is to eat the things that you like! I tend to get into trouble when putting leftovers away, I sneak a few bites in here and there!oops!

I agree with you Beret. I read once that the secret of skinny people is to eat right 90% of the time and cheat 10%.

Also, Limpingalone, whatever you eat in excess will appear 5 to 7 days later on the scale (if you don't go back to your good habits the day after of course). Never on the same day or the day after like people seem to think.

Good luck all of you! I reached my weight goal 2 weeks ago and I'm in the process of becoming a MEMBER FOR LIFE!!!

I absolutely adore your honesty and the fact that you are willing to show all of us that you still struggle and have to make deliberate choices when it comes to food... So many people lose weight and forget how difficult it is to do so... Thanks to you for being a constant source of inspiration and motivation for people like me that are just on the beginning of their WW journey... I'm down 22 pounds since Jan 4, with 98 more to go until I reach my goal. I can't wait to do my before and after pictures like yours... THANKS!!!

I think you should have added a "can I get an amen, sister?" to the end of that. :) I would have amen-ed it!
I've been ordering a big salad, eating it all, then eating my slice of pizza. If I go back for more then I'm overstuffed and I'm learning to hate that feeling. It's working for me, and that's what everyone has to do, what works for them.
I loved the rule list, btw. I made one for myself for last weekend and it actually worked!

Great post! I can't believe you got some nasty comments! I think this is what it's all about - learning to eat in the real world. Learning to watch our portions, but enjoy the stuff we like to eat! It CAN be done!

I love your 'voice.' I can practically hear you saying...of course, I have watched your videos. You continue to be an inspiration.

I appreciate you.

I am 2 weeks old to Weight Watchers and just discovered your blog yesterday. After reading through your Friday post - WOW, this is awesome. I love good shares where I can relate to people and I love your blog!
Thank you for your post. I often times have to remind myself what "normal" means and your latest post really hits home the very things that I need to remind myself daily as I begin this journey of creating a healthy relationship with food.
Thank you for your share!

I've made lifetime weight countless times. Well, I guess I can count to 2, but I'm on that journey again. You give me hope that there truly is a way to maintain a healthy weight while living in the real world.

thank you,

Heather,

I love you and your honesty. You make me feel like my journey is real! You give the best advice and I love it when you slap me upside the head! Thank you! Recently my leader talked to me about eating pizza out. We go to a family owned place here in Houston and enjoy pizza every week. Yes I have to use some flex and yes I have to plan but it is something that I looks forward to.

I use to be the biggest mexican food junkie and it's taken me the last 3 years to change how I approach my first love. I still have it but allow it very differently and I'm happy. I would love nothing more for you to share how you make this real! Eating out is a huge issue for me and one that scares the hell out of me because I'm not confident enough on figuring the points. I make huge errors but I want to learn. Isn't this what it is all about.

I'm so glad to hear that you band the negativity away from you and this awesome site. Keep sending them packing. You have enough followers who love you and value everything that you put on your site.

Keep up the good work!

Much love!

Just found your website and LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! You DO keep it real like the others said. I like that. I am not one for staying on a program or schedule long and really need to know that sometimes the schedule doesn't matter.
