OK, so goal #1 has to be strength training. If nothing else, just the basics. Here's why. I unwrapped the Biggest Loser Wii Fit game & used it for the first time last night. MAN, are my arms & upper back muscles killing me tonight. It's all I can do to type this message. lol Sad, but true. I've had a fabulous kick start with the hours upon hours of physical therapy for my knee. Technically, it's my IT band. Common issue with runners, but my physical therapist has given me umpteen hip exercises. My hips are week, which tweaks the rest of my leg. When you run 8, 9, 10+ miles at a time on a tweaked leg....you end up with issues. So put strength training on the tippy top of my list. I'll post an in depth review of the game in a few days when I know more about it.
Goal #2 is....well....it's a big one. Daunting. Overwhelming. However, I also felt the same way about taking on a half marathon when I couldn't even run to the stop sign just two houses down from me. Remember me blabbing on and on about that? I do. I know I challenged myself to run 300 miles this year back in January, but I've already tackled 76+ (I know there were more miles that went undocumented, but I'm sucking it up & low balling my mileage total thus far). I totally get that 76 isn't THAT great of a number considering I was training for (& ran) a half marathon. However, I knocked out those 76 miles with a knee injury that has kept me from doing any activity for several weeks now, more snow than I've ever seen in my life, illness that lasted two full weeks, etc. If I can pull off 76 miles in a 2 1/2 month time frame with all of that business going on, there's no telling how far I can go once sunny days & wellness hit. So, for goal #2, I've decided to run 1,000 miles in 2010. *gasp* I know. HUGE!
I've done the math. Crunched the numbers. I'm basing all of it on the 76 I've already logged, and being able to run again starting in June (even though I'm hoping to start running again before then).
1,000 (the goal) - 76 (already hammered out) = 924 miles remaining
924 (remaining) / 7 (months June thru December) = 132 miles per month
132 (miles per month) / 4 (weeks in a month) = 33 miles per week
I can totally do that!!!! I think. Last summer, when I was new to this & weaker, I raked in 90+ miles per month. If I did it then, I can pull off 132 now. Of course, if I'm unable to run again come June, I'll have to rethink my goal. lol
I would really like to run a full marathon in December, but would be very happy to knock out a couple of more half marathons with better times than my first. At least I would feel better about taking this strange love to the next level.
PS...I created a ticker to the right of the screen to keep track of the yearly running mileage totals.
PSS...Food goals are a totally different ball of twine. I'm trying out a few new things. I'll update you on that another time. Oh, and I've been taking pictures & writing recipes like a crazy lady. I just need 5 more hours in each day to get it all here on the blog. I keep telling my husband I need an assistant...and a maid. He's not falling for it. (shoot!)

It's a great goal! Best of luck to you. I set a goal of 1000 miles walking a few years back -- and since I had the whole year it was only 20 miles/week. I liked having a weekly short term goal. I also just realized I really liked having a goal I was totally in control of -- unlike the scale which did what it wanted to do. I hit my 1000 in October and wound up doing 1200 for the year - one of my proudest accomplishments.
Those are fantastic goals, H! I'm so proud of you!
Run, Heather, Run!!!!
Wow, you are amazing! To set those kind of goals? You go, girl! You inspire me to want to set some goals myself. Well, I did set a goal but it's for next week. So what about the rest of the year?
My goal for next week, which will be my one-year anniversary of going for my first run ever, is to run six miles. The bummer is my foot is still kind of sore (okay, I'm a little worried), but we'll see what happens.
Hey, you are my inspiration. If you can do what you did at the Princess Marathon, I can surely run 6 miles on a sore foot!
I can't believe you keep hammering it out with the injury & surgery. MAN, you are my hero. [cue the music....Bette Midler...."did you ever know that you're my heeeeee-ro?"]
Ive been reading your blog for a few weeks now and I think it rocks. It is really motivating. I have been off and on WW for a few years....but now really trying to stick with it! I would love to start running. How do I start?
Oh, and I found it was really important to keep the strength training up while pursuing the miles. So it's great that that is part of your goal ...
